I tried removing users and pressing the x(similar to how images can be removed) but it did not remove them.? The label merge by distance replaces remove doubles while the function remain unchanged.

Replace context.selected_objects with context.scene.objects for all in the current scene, or bpy.data.objects to remove all animation data from all objects. Not sure if there is a difference.
